The winner of the Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Partnership Award in India was announced by President & Mrs. Jimmy Carter on October 27 at Taj Palace in New Delhi. The three finalists below appear in order of their placement.
- St. Agnes College Watershed Management & Development Program in Karnataka "winner"
- Panjab University in Panjab Adult Literacy Program
- Aligarh Muslim University in Uttar Pradesh Polio Eradication Program
The Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Partnership Foundation Award (JRCPA) recognizes, "best partnership program (including a department of NSS)between a university and community where students are encouraged to participate to make a difference to the lives of others and their own"

For Sue Sehgal, the opportunity to reconnect with her Indian roots after 36 years was created by former US President Jimmy Carter. A former faculty member at the department of psychology at Georgia State University in Atlanta, Georgia, Sehgal is the founder and president of Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Partnership Foundation.
“I’ve finished my last semester with my students and am now involved full-time in expanding the foundation’s programme of recognising and showcasing the best academic community work between campuses and communities.
While teaching for many years has been great, taking the Carter partnership global and expanding it is a wonderful experience for me,” says Sehgal who went to the US to join her husband after she finished her graduation from Punjab University. “We are now expanding this programme in India for which I have been travelling to several states such as Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Punjab.
We hope to get institutions like IITs and IIMs involved in this programme which seeks to recognise significant community service by students and their faculty members. This has also created an opportunity for Sehgal to help her daughter Kashi, a PhD from Georgia Tech and son Kabir, a masters from London School of Economics, to discover their Indian roots.
Sehgal, a doctorate in social psychology who specialises in organisational and behavioural issues, is now using her wide consulting experience with corporates for networking and fund-raising. “In the US, the foundation has received support from BellSouth, Southern Company, Anne E. Casey Foundation and W. K. Kellogg Foundation.
The first international expansion to India is being sponsored by Coca-Cola. We hope that Indian companies too will come forward to support us,” she says. Like in the US, in India too, the JRCP award will encourage communities where institutions are located to support the efforts of students who work in communities and make a difference to others - and enhance their own education.
President & Mrs Carter will be in India in October 2006 to present the award.
“Both of them are great role models and strongly believe in social outreach. This programme is about making a difference on global campuses and about visibility or recognition for them,” says Sehgal.
Her own experience in academic civic engagement work is helping her to lead the programme which highlights partnerships between campuses and communities. “I had approached President Carter because he always wanted to do something for education. This programme provided a natural fit,” she says.
“The President symbolises diversity and has provided support for causes as wide ranging as peace and education.Besides, the spirit of partnership between his wife and him is also worth emulating. They are both equally involved as partners,” adds Sehgal.
